Following news of Modern Nature’s upcoming Island of Noise LP, we’re very pleased to announce a quartet of special screenings of the album’s accompanying film, taking place next month in London, Lewes, Bristol and Hebden Bridge in partnership with some of our favourite independent venues and record shops.
On Monday 15 November, at The Social, London, the screening will be followed by a Q&A between Jack Cooper and Emma Warren, with tunes from DJ Frances Castle and records available from our Hackney buds Stranger Than Paradise. (Tickets £5)
On Friday 19 November, we head to The Royal Oak, Lewes, where Jack Cooper and director Conan Roberts will appear in conversation with Richard Norris. Caught by the River DJs follow, with record provision from the Union Music Store. (Tickets £5)
Saturday 20 November sees the film screened at the Friendly Records Bar, Bristol, with Jack Cooper Q&A hosted by Richard King, and the Friendly Records crew on both wax-vending and DJ duties. (Tickets £5)
And finally, on Saturday 27 November, the film will be screened at the Trades Club, Hebden Bridge, alongside Tommy Perman’s film accompaniment to Andrew Wasylyk’s recent album Balgay Hill: Morning in Magnolia. Jack Cooper appears in conversation with Elizabeth Alker, records will be sold by Huddersfield’s Vinyl Tap, and we’ll be hopping back behind the decks. (Tickets £8)
Of the film, Cooper says: “We listen to music in lots of different circumstances, but it’s increasingly rare to sit down and listen to an album without distractions, so that was really the initial aim with this film; to make something that could focus one’s attention on the music. When Conan Roberts and I started filming it at the start of the year, it quickly took on a life of its own as it built on one of the album’s main themes; finding order within chaos. Then as the year panned out, a narrative emerged with a country re-emerging from the pandemic.” Watch the trailer below.
Tickets are onsale now (London here; Lewes here; Bristol here: Hebden Bridge here). Lunker-tier Caught by the River subscribers can bag 20% off tickets to the London, Lewes and Hebden Bridge events: just check your email inboxes for details.

Island Of Noise is released on 19 November by Bella Union. The album will be released only as a deluxe double vinyl box set with a second companion LP titled Island Of Silence: a beautiful instrumental reimagining of the record. The album will be released, using only sustainable materials, on 180g vinyl — complete with a lavish booklet featuring the work of ten other artists, including Booker-nominated poet Robin Robertson, mycologist Merlin Sheldrake, illustrator Sophy Hollington, musician Eugene Chadbourne and writer Richard King, that reinterpret, deconstruct or take inspiration from the ten tracks on the record.
