Hanes: a poem by Sophie McKeand

Sophie McKeand | 19th January 2017

Something to get you in the mood for our afternoon of poetry and prose, taking place at Machpelah Mill, Hebden Bridge, this Saturday.

Words, film & sound by Sophie McKeand. Feat. live recordings from Liverpool Psych Fest on 27th Sept 2014 courtesy of PZYK Production Line. With thanks to Emmi Manteau for help with sound production.

Sophie will be reading, alongside Zaffar Kunial, Adam O’Riordan, Adelle Stripe, Anna Wood and our poets-in-residence Will Burns and Martha Sprackland in Hebden Bridge. More info & tickets can be found here.

She says of the poem: ‘Hanes is the title of my second pamphlet. It’s a Cymraeg word that means history and story, which is a gorgeous one-word poem in itself. I’m drawn to the tensions within this word that beautifully illustrate the innate poetry and wisdom of the Welsh language. This poem is a lament for the personal stories or ‘hanes’ that are lost in our wider historical narratives and a howl at the alienation that continues to be generated: ‘afraid of arms/ I hide in strangers’ words’.

This short film was also my first foray into using sound and images.’
