We’ve been aware of Finnish-English artist and performer Hanna Tuulikki for a while now. She first began exploring the idea of mimesis of birdsong and gaelic back in 2010 with her “multi-disciplinary arts project” ‘Air falbh leis na h-eòin’.

As it explains on her site: “Hanna’s vocal composition ‘Guth an Eòin’/Voice of the Bird sits at the heart of the project. It was written for a female vocal ensemble, reinterpreting archive, fragmenting and re-weaving extracts of Gaelic songs into an extended soundscape that emerges from and responds to landscape.”

She was commissioned, as part of the Glasgow Cultural Programme, last year to transform these concepts into a site-specific art performance which was then performed at the harbour on the Isle of Canna but now she’s bringing it all into a digital sphere. So, if like us you couldn’t make it to Scotland, then you can still experience a slice of the action.

It will be hosted by online arts platform, The Space, who say; “In the digital iteration of Away with the Birds, Tuulikki offers users the unique opportunity to navigate their own way around her 3m wide hand-drawn visual score. In their own time, users can explore the texture and detail of this major piece of work, gradually excavating elements that offer a new perspective on the way Tuulikki and her score work.”
